On May 20, the Board of Education honored several students and staff members with the President's Spotlight:
OCM BOCES Students
Six Baker High School students enrolled in career and technical programs at OCM BOCES competed in the SkillsUSA state competition, held at the New York State Fairgrounds on April 25, 2013.

Daniel Belair, a student in the computer technology program, competed in the Internetworking Category.

Emily Arthur, a student in the laboratory technician program, competed in the Job Skills Demo Category. In February, she received first place in this category at the regional competition held at SUNY Morrisville.

Paige Bell, a student in the laboratory technician program, competed in the Occupational Health and Safety Category. At the regional competition in February, she received first place in this category.

Sarah Brown, a student in the laboratory technician program, competed in the Related Technical Math Category. At the regional competition in February, she received third place in this category.

Jenna Griffo, a student in the pastry arts program, competed in the Job Interview Category. In February, she received third place in this category at the regional competition.

Tyler Myers, a student in the automotive collision technology program, received third place in the Collision Repair Technology category in the state competition.

Jessica Ancona - a fourth-grade teacher at McNamara Elementary School, has been selected to attend the 2013 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J. this summer. The academy is an all-expense paid training program for third- through fifth-grade teachers to provide them with opportunities to network with other educators, innovative ideas for teaching math and science, and tools to enhance curricula.

Megan Osetek - a FACS teacher at Ray Middle School, has been named the recipient of the Central New York Association of Family and Consumer Science Educators Promising New Professional Award. The award recognizes and encourages teachers who are beginning their careers in FACS education.

Christina Rode - a FACS teacher at Baker High School, has been named the recipient of the Central New York Association of Family and Consumer Science Educators FCCLA Advisor of the Year Award. This award recognizes a teacher’s contributions to his or her Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter through advisement, community projects, and student centered activities.

On April 8, the Board of Education honored students artists and student athletes for their recent achievements.
23rd Annual Legislative Student Art Exhibit
Eight Baldwinsville students had their artwork on display in the 23rd Annual Legislative Student Art Exhibit, March 4-8 at the Legislative Office Building in Albany. The show celebrated the artistic accomplishments of students in grades K-12 from across the state.
Baldwinsville students selected for the exhibition were:
·Isabella Nalli and Sophia Randolph, McNamara Elementary School;
·Kaitlyn Neuman and Caitlyn Williams, Palmer Elementary School;
·Sydney Hall and Kaitlyn Hamilton, Reynolds Elementary School; and
·Katie DeFio and Nora Penhollow, Van Buren Elementary School.
WINTER ATHLETES
The following winter athletes represented the district in state competition:
Girls Bowling
Anne Peterson – competed as a member of the All-Section III girls bowling team in the NYS Girls Bowling Tournament held on March 3 in Mattydale. The Section III team finished in second place.
Wrestling
Kevin Paul and Brian Honsinger – competed in the New York State wrestling championships held in Albany on February 22 and 23.
Indoor Track
Alec Peinkofer – Placed 2nd in the 1000m at the New York State Championships held March 2 at Cornell University.
Josh Perez – Competed in the 1600m at the New York State Championships held on March 2 at Cornell University.
Boys 4x400m Relay Team: The team of Andrew Fleming, Jeff Mahar, Nate Wicks and Dan Walker, with Brian Mahar as an alternate, competed in the state championships at Cornell University on March 2. The team place 4th in the state and 5th in the Federation.
Girls 4x400m Relay Team:The team of Cierra Allen, Angelica Tomasello, Sarah Klaben and Mackenzie Ross, with alternates Marissa Lathrop and Elise Seifritz, competed in the state championships at Cornell University on March 2. The team placed 5th in the state and 6th in the Federation. They also competed in the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City on March 10, finishing in 27th place.

The Board of Education honored several students for their accomplishments at its March 4 regular meeting.
The Board recognized five students who were among 36 finalists in The Post-Standard/WCNY Spelling Bee. They competed in the oral round of the competition, which was broadcast live on WCNY on February 2.

The board also recognized Ryan Tighe, a member of the Baldwinsville Marching Band. He was selected to perform with the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The All-American Marching Band only selects 125 students from thousands of applications each year.

The Board of Education honored the Baldwinsville Marching Band with the President's Spotlight at its November 19 meeting. The band won first place in the Large School 2 Class at the 40th Annual New York State Field Band Championships held at the Carrier Dome on October 28, 2012. At the meeting the band performed its award winning show, "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas."

They are two of 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who have the opportunity to continue in the competition for over 8,000 National Merit Scholarships. Ryan McArdell - a senior at Baker High School, placed first in the automotive refinishing category at the New York State SkillsUSA competition held on April 26 at the New York State Fairgrounds. He is in the automotive collision technology program at OCM BOCES. By placing first, he has qualified to compete in the National SkillsUSA competition, to be held in Kansas City in June.

Tony Cardamone, Principal of Elden Elementary School, has been selected as the 2012 New York State Elementary School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS). The award is given annually to a SAANYS member who sets the pace, character, and quality of education for the children in the school, has made a commitment to parents and the community, and has shown evidence of outstanding contributions to the community and the educational process.

District Business Teachers
Baker High School has received approval from the New York State Education Department to offer its Business Finance and Business Marketing strands as career and technical education (CTE) programs. The high school may add technical endorsements to the diplomas of its students completing these programs beginning with the graduating class of 2012. Through rigorous standards and requirements, CTE programs prepare students for careers and postsecondary education.
Baker High School’s successful completion of the process for CTE certification was due to the diligence, dedication, and collaboration of:

The Board of Education honored the ice hockey team with the President's Spotlight at its April 16 meeting. The ice hockey team is the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc.’s Winter 2011-2012 Scholar/Athlete Ice Hockey Team State Champion. The team was awarded this honor based on its composite grade point average of 95.68 percent, which is the highest of any high school ice hockey team in the state for the winter 2011-2012 athletic season. Mark Lloyd is head coach of the team and Mike Pope is the assistant coach. Members of the team are:

On March 19, the Board of Education honored the following winter athletes for their achievements:
Wrestling - Coach Tony Burkinshaw was named Section III Wrestling Coach of the Year.
The following athletes competed in the state tournament, held February 24 & 25 at Times Union Center:
Kevin Paul – competed at 106 pounds at states. He is the Section III Division 1 Champion at this weight.
Patrick Nasoni – competed at 195 pounds at states. He is the Section III Division 1 Champion at this weight.
Boys Swimming - Daniel Burke, the Section III Class A champion in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke, competed in these two events at the state competition held March 2 & 3 at Erie Community College in Buffalo. In the 200-yard medley he finished 20th and in the 100-yard backstroke he finished in 10th place.
Indoor Track - The following athletes competed in the state Indoor Track and Field Championships held March 3 at Cornell University:
Gina Carnovale - 300-meter dash – finished in 16th place
Shay Sargeant - 55-meter dash – finished in 28th place
Andy Fleming, Matt Pond, Josh Perez, and Alec Peinkofer - Boys 4 x 800 meter relay – They finished in 6th place.
Girls Bowling - Anne Peterson competed in the NYS Girls Bowling Tournament, March 3 & 4, held in Waverly, NY. She finished in 22nd place.
Girls Gymnastics – Emma Manning was a member of the Section 3 gymnastics team that finished 2nd in the state meet. She was the Section 3 Sportsmanship Winner at the state meet. |

The Board of Education honored several students with the President's Spotlight at it's February 27 meeting. Ryan Peters - a senior at Baker High School and the board’s ex-officio student member, was honored for receiving the Elks Community Service Award from Liverpool Elks Lodge 2348.

October 17, 2011 - The district recognized several students and staff members with the President’s Spotlight at the Board’s October 17 meeting.
Nathan James and Jacob Minardi, seniors at Baker High School, were honored for being named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. They are two of 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who have the opportunity to continue in the competition for over 8,000 National Merit Scholarships.

The Board honored Paul Mizer, a technology teacher at Baker High School, for being named the 2011-2012 Technology Teacher of the Year by The Central New York Technology & Engineering Educators’ Association.
He was recognized for his contributions to the infusion and implementation of the Project Lead the Way engineering program curriculum at Baker High School, as well as for his leadership within the local and state technology and engineering educators associations.
The Board also recognized the high school’s technology teachers. The Central New York Technology & Engineering Educators’ Association named the technology program at Baker High School the 2011-2012 Technology Program of the Year. The school’s technology department includes teachers Maria Coglitore, Jamie Cuyler, Jeffery Fortais, Matthew Hudson, and Paul Mizer. Baker’s program was recognized for its technology teachers’ innovation and leadership in their discipline.
