On November 2, the third-grade classes of McNamara Elementary School presented a check to their neighbor, the Baldwinsville/Lakeside Fire Station #2, to help fund the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Department’s 9/11 Memorial. The memorial is located on the lawn of the fire station and features two steel beams from the ruins of the north tower of the World Trade Center.
Fire Chief Casey Pickard and Tom Perkins, President of the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Department, accepted the donation of $1,508.13 that the third-graders collected with a school-wide coin fundraiser, dubbed “Coins for Courage.” They held the fundraiser over five days in mid-October as a service learning project. As the money was collected the students deposited it into a firefighter’s boot, a symbol of the bravery of the 9/11 emergency responders who gave their lives to save others.
The memorial’s official dedication ceremony was on September 11, 2011. However, construction of the memorial is not complete, due to a lack of funds. Perkins said the school’s donation is roughly half of the funds the fire department needs to complete the memorial’s name wall. He noted that the fire department plans to install a brick walkway at the memorial. Those interested in helping to complete the memorial can visit the fire department’s website, www.baldwinsvillefire.com, for information on how to purchase a brick for the walkway.
