On May 23, Baker High School conducted a simulated DWI car crash scene at Pelcher/Arcaro Stadium for the senior class. The purpose of the simulation was to expose students to the very real and horrific consequences and legal ramifications of drinking while intoxicated to prevent this type of tragedy from occurring and to guide seniors to making responsible decisions, particularly as the senior ball and the end of the school year approach.
Students were witnesses to a victim, their classmate, being pronounced dead at the scene, devastated parents learning of their child’s death, a DWI suspect (another classmate) put through field sobriety tests and arrested, and a second critical victim (a classmate) extricated from a vehicle and transported to the hospital.
The scene then shifted to the high school auditorium where students filed past their classmate’s closed casket and his grieving parents before a mock court scene began with the suspect arraigned before a judge.
The district and Baker High School would like to thank the following agencies for participating in the simulated DWI crash: Baldwinsville Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department, Baldwinsville Fire Department, Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps., Falardeau Funeral Home and Judge E. Huling from the Village of Baldwinsville Court.
Thank you also to those who provided assistance or donations for the event: Belgium-Cold Springs Fire Department, Benwood Auto Parts, Timber Tree Service, Baker High School PTSA, BCSD Board of Education and PAC-B.
Thank you to student actors Zach Meyers, Molly Makowiec, Matthew Noll and Joanne Damiano, and thank you to parent actors Laurie and Eric Noll.
