Baker Senior Selected for 2016 Rotary Youth Leadership Award

Patrick O’Neill, a Senior at C.W. Baker High School was selected to represent his school at the 2016 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.  Rotary International District 7150 sponsored a Selective Summer Youth Leadership Program which took place at Cazenovia College from July 8th-10 th, where the students stayed on campus all weekend.  After Patrick submitted an application, went through an interview, and provided an essay on what leadership meant to him, the Baldwinsville Rotary selected Patrick to attend the program.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive training program for young adults with proven leadership ability and a commitment to community service.  The program focuses on helping young adults discover their potential and develop the skills needed to be a leader..

Upon completion of the RYLA program, each candidate was required to pick a service project to complete on their own something that had personal meaning to them.  Patrick selected the Syracuse Home in Baldwinsville (an elderly rehabilitation center) to be his service project, as his Grandmother had once spent time there years ago.  Patrick decided to create gift bags filled with crayons, coloring books, cards and hand exercise balls, to entertain the residents who may not have family or others to visit them.  The gift bags were a way to keep them engaged with activities and let them know someone cares about them. On December 20th, Patrick delivered his gifts to Syracuse Home where he surprised and put a smile on many residents’ faces.
