September

Second graders will continue their exploration of music by reinforcing and reviewing 1st grade vocabulary such as:

Beat vs. Rhythm

Is Beat steady and strong?  Is Rhythm short and long?
Students will explore keeping the beat with various instruments such as rhythm sticks, boomwhackers, and hand drums.
Students will play the "Do You Know My Friends At School?" game.
We will discover how to write our names in rhythms that we just clapped.

Pitch - How high, medium, or low a note is.
We will play the do, mi, sol children game.
Students will be encouraged to sing with hand signs.
Students will learn the song, "Do, Re, Mi" and watch the clip from the Sound of Music where Maria teaches about melody.
April

Students furthered their studies of the Families of Instruments and built upon what we had already learned in Kindergarten and 1st Grade.  Luigi's Baton, took us on a magical adventure through Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, and the String families.  Each week we focused on how the instrument produces a sound and classifying them into the correct families.  Some of the best parts of our adventure with Luigi were following the listening maps that went along with each family.  From the "Pizzicato Polka" by Strauss for the Strings to the Exciting "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" by Benjamin Britten for Percussion we heard some great pieces of classical music!  We will finish this unit of study by watching My Many Colored Days by Dr. Suess and seeing how the creators of this movie chose to use certain families of instruments to paint the pages of Dr. Suess book and make it come to life on the screen.  We have also begun to think about what instrument we might want to play in 3rd or 4th grade at Elden Elementary.
