District Taking Preventive Measures Against Bed Bugs

October 11, 2017

Dear Baldwinsville School District Families:

On behalf of Superintendent McDonald, I am writing to share with you that today we discovered and confirmed the presence of a single (one) bed bug at Ray Middle School.  I want to assure you that the district is taking this exposure very seriously and we are following the guidelines provided to us by Ehrlich Pest Control (the pest control management company we are working with), the New York State Education Department, and the Onondaga County Health Department.

The best course of action for the district is to thoroughly clean, disinfect, vacuum, and in some cases use monitoring boards to ensure this is an isolated incident.  As a precautionary measure the district is searching and treating all of the school buildings and busses by applying a safe, alcohol-based treatment to affected surfaces.

Our custodial staff has been thoroughly cleaning all rooms and Ehrlich Pest Control will be searching each building using dogs trained to locate bed bugs.  If additional locations are found, Ehrlich Pest Control will effectively treat the areas with alcohol.  We are also cleaning all school buses.

We know that these bugs do not originate in the school setting and that they are being “carried” into the school. We are asking all families to thoroughly inspect your child’s personal belongings and backpacks to ensure they are not “carrying” these bugs. You can find information on bed bugs here.

As a precaution, you can place your child’s clothing in a dryer for 40 minutes (high heat kills bed bugs) or store clothing in a plastic bag prior to washing. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work through this issue.

If you have questions regarding the district’s course of action for this matter you may call the district office at 315-638-6043.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. DeBarbieri
Deputy Superintendent
