CHARACTER EDUCATION

 Positivity Project
At Palmer we are exploring Positive Psychology by studying the 24 positive character strengths. These strengths can be found across cultures, physical borders and time. We are purposefully and explicitly teaching these key terms to provide our students with a common language focused on positive character. Please "Like" us on Facebook to see our progress as a learning community. You may also want to check out the Positivity Project homepage for more information about the organization helping us structure our character education instruction.

 Excellence Team
Each week, the classroom teacher nominates a student to be on the Excellence Team.  Students are chosen for exemplifying the positive character strength of the week.  Students receive a certificate and luncheon in their honor, as well as Bravo Beads with their character strength.  Sal's Pizza provides the pizza and our PTA provides the milk and paper goods for the luncheon with the principal.

   Safety Patrol
The Safety Patrol consists of fifth grade students who are chosen to help out for a quarter of the year.  Only fifth grade students are chosen, as they represent the highest grade in our school and are role models for the other students.  They are chosen for their leadership, sense of responsibility, and willingness to help others.  The Safety Patrol assists the staff in maintaining a caring, orderly environment as students enter and exit our school!
 Announcing Team
Our fifth grade students have the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills during morning announcements.  Student announcers
share thoughts about possitive character strengths, recognize other students on their birthdays,  welcome new students to our school, and encourage everyone to have a great day at Palmer, where we all learn together.

   Holiday Food Drive
We collect food to be distributed to needy families. Last year several hundred pounds of food was collected for families in the Baldwinsville area. The third graders make announcements and promote our school-wide drive!
Hat and Mitten Tree
Students collect hats and mittens for needy children in the Baldwinsville area. The collected hats and mittens are generously donated to the Baldwinsville Christmas Bureau for distribution.
