Welcome to E2 (Elden Elementary) Math Connection!
Our Math series, Everyday Mathematics, has been revised and updated so it is even better for Grades K-5! This program, designed by the University of Chicago, encourages students to investigate different strategies to solve math problems. They are also sometimes directed to explain their thinking in writing which helps them to explore mathematical ideas even further. Check out their website when you have time for more information! Have fun doing Math!

MATH FACT PRACTICE
Using fact triangles is an excellent way to help your child learn their math facts. The Everyday Mathematics Program encourages using addition/subtraction and multiplication/division fact triangles instead of traditional flashcards because of their emphasis on “fact families”.
In the following addition/subtraction fact triangle example, three numbers are placed in the corners of the triangle. The sum (answer to the addition problem) is at the top under a dot or asterisk. Cover one corner of the triangle at a time and this will give an addition or subtraction fact. In the example below, the number “4” is covered so this fact would be 7 – 3 = “4”. After each corner of the triangle is covered, it produces four number models. This is called a “fact family”. (Two addition number sentences and two subtraction number sentences.)

Use fact triangles for multiplication and division the same way to help build math fact reflexes.

ALGORITHMS
An algorithm is a set of step-by-step instructions that, when followed correctly, will always yield a correct result. The Everyday Mathematics Program includes a variety of suggested algorithms that students can use when solving arithmetric problems.
