Required Supplies:

You will need to purchase a set of paint brushes, a small sketchbook, and a palette for paint.

You should have at least 3 round brushes of different sizes and one large flat brush. I have ordered a very nice set of brushes that will be for sale at the school store within the next few weeks. You can also purchase a set of brushes for $6-$10 at a local art supply store (Commercial Art Supply, Michael’s, A.C. Moore, etc..). Look for brushes that are made from ‘taklon’ (this is a synthetic fiber that is very soft, affordable, and perfect for the student artist!).

The palette can be simple (an old muffin tin or plastic plate) or more elaborate. Go to my website to see examples of palettes that will work well for this class!

The journal/sketchbook should be between 5x7 and 8x10.
Make sure it is unlined and has at least 50 pages.

Here is what your supplies should look like:

Palette options:

Palettes range in price from $1.99 to $15 depending on your preference

Brush Options:

Please purchase a quality set of artist brushes! It is important that your brushes are large enough to accommodate a 24"x36" canvas and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. You need a flat wash brush that has bristles at least 1" wide and a round brushes that range from a size 2 to size 9. Brush sets range in price from about $8 to $30. If you purchase a set from A.C. Moore, Michael's, or Hobby Lobby, you can take advantage of their 40% off coupons. Commercial Art Supply in Syracuse has the best selection and quality. The advantage of shopping at C.A.S. is that you can purchase only the brushes you think you will need.

Sketchbook:

I recommend the Large Moleskine brand sketchbook that is sold at Barnes and Noble or Commercial Art Supply. This book has unlined pages, is beautifully constructed, and is the perfect size (5x8). You can also find replica Moleskin journals at many art stores for a reduced cost. These range in price from $3 to $12.
