Ray Middle School principal named 2026 SAANYS Region 10 Secondary Administrator of the Year Award
Ray Middle School Principal Micahel Pope was recently honored by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS) for his incredible leadership.
Mr. Pope was honored with the 2026 SAANYS Region 10 Secondary Administrator of the Year Award at its inaugural awards ceremony on May 21st. SAANYS Region 10 spans Cayuga, Cortland, Onondaga and Oswego counties. Mr. Pope was recognized for his dedication to Baldwinsville Central School District students and the support he provides to his fellow educators.
“Michael’s impact on our academic culture has been transformative,” according to his nomination letter submitted by Ray Middle School staff. “He successfully implemented
building-wide instructional practices through intentional, staff-led PD (professional development) that actually sticks. One of his standout wins has been the integration of tiered vocabulary across all classrooms. By prioritizing how our students speak and write, he has given our students the confidence to tackle high-level content.”
Mr. Pope, who has been the principal since 2023, is also praised for his leadership among educators.
“What we appreciate most, however, is his dedication to growing leaders,” the nomination continues. “Michael doesn't micro-manage; he empowers. He has a unique gift for identifying the strengths in his team, both teachers and administrators, and providing the mentorship needed to help us reach the next level. He creates an environment where we feel safe to innovate because we know we have his support.”
Mr. Pope previously served as an assistant principal at Ray from 2019 to 2023. He also taught English at C.W. Baker High School for 12 years from 2007 to 2019.
“Mike Pope has been an integral part of our team for nearly two decades,” said Superintendent Dr. Joseph DeBarbieri. “Throughout his time in Baldwinsville, he has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to students, staff and the entire school community. His leadership at Ray Middle School has helped foster a culture of growth, collaboration and academic excellence. This recognition is a reflection of the positive impact he makes every day, and we are proud to see him honored by SAANYS.”
