District to Hold Suicide Prevention Presentation for Grades 10-12

As part of its efforts to put mental health on the same level as physical health, the Baldwinsville Central School District will provide the students of Baker High School with a presentation on suicide prevention.

On Tuesday, December 13, 2016 Baker students will attend a presentation on suicide prevention at the Word of Life, due to the renovation of the Baker auditorium. Jacob Mars, a certified QPR (Question-Persuade-Refer) Suicide Prevention Instructor, will present information that includes the difference between depression and the blues, research-based youth warning signs of suicide, risk factors, and how to talk to someone who might be at risk for suicide.

Mr. Mars’ presentation is sponsored by SAVE – Suicide Awareness Voices in Education. SAVE will be providing students with literature on suicide awareness at the presentation. After the presentation, Mr. Mars will be available at Baker High School for any student who wishes to speak with him.

In the spring of 2016, the District formed a mental health committee to address community concerns regarding our students’ mental health, including suicide awareness and available mental health resources. The Baldwinsville Central School District has made mental health education a priority for this school year and beyond.

The District is planning mental health and suicide awareness presentations for parents and the community, to be held at later dates. The District will announce the presentation dates when they are finalized.
