Robotics Team Qualifies for State Competition

A team of students from Baker High School has qualified for the state robotics competition, scheduled for March 11 at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College.

The team, Ares, qualified for states after winning the Design Award at the Baldwinsville VEX Robotics Competition held on January 20 at Baker High School. Members of the team are Griffin Seifritz, Sean Locke, David Teska, Thomas Grindle, Damien Maw-Coe, and Tyler Miller.

Competition judges evaluated each team’s robot based on how well the team used engineering concepts to create a design and how well the robot performed based on the design. Sean Locke, a senior at the high school, noted that he and his teammates had to build a robot and be able to explain to the judges how they created the design to make the robot successfully complete various tasks. He said that VEX competitions stress the need for students to have a solid understanding of engineering concepts. They must also be able to apply the concepts to real world situations while working under pressure and have strong problem solving skills.

Thirty-two teams from 12 school districts in the Central New York area participated in the competition. Baldwinsville had four teams representing the district, including an all-girls team of four Baker sophomores – Josie Libbon, Elyssa Adams, Alli Hunt and Jenna Horton. It was the students’ first time building a robot to use in competition. They are fine-tuning their robot for future events this season.
