Status of Kitchen Construction @ Baker HS

There has been some concerns raised by our school community regarding the construction at the Baker HS Cafeteria. Our 2016 Capital Project vote authorized the District to rebuild the Baker HS kitchen. This kitchen is 50 years old and in severe need for a re-construction.  The contractors started demolition the day after school let out at the end of June 2019. Contractors spent the summer taking the old kitchen out by hand. They poured footers for coolers, installed a new grease trap and sewer line in the Quad. Unfortunately due to the time necessary to complete the project this altered a number of things at Baker HS. We went from three lunch periods to four. This affected the school schedule for Baker HS.

The situation also requires we prepare food off site at Durgee Junior High School and the Stadium Concession Stand.   This has limited our menu somewhat.  Yet there are salads, wraps and sub sandwiches in addition to the regular hot lunch food choices.   There is room at each lunch period to seat 370 students. There have been open seats each day at each lunch period since school started on September 4th.

The end of the construction on the Baker HS kitchen is scheduled for December 2019 with the new kitchen being active in time for second semester in January 2020.   The finished product will be something we can all be proud of.

The District could have done a better job of communicating the plans for the construction work at Baker High School and for that we apologize.  If you have any more questions or concerns about the new high school kitchen project please feel free to contact Mr. James J. Rodems, Assistant Superintendent for Management Services  or Mr. Brian Wright,  Director of Food Service at 315-638-6055.
