Important Message from Superintendent McDonald

September 24, 2019

Dear Parents:

I am writing to you in light of recent trends we have observed in the school community regarding social media posts.  In the age of ever-accessible technology, parents and students have more opportunities than ever to post their opinions on topics and widely disseminate them to their networks.  This increased connectivity can bring about wonderful outcomes, with individuals feeling part of a greater community and successes being shared when they otherwise may not be.

The Baldwinsville Central School District strives to be current in our responses to events and occurrences in the community relating to our school district.  We also strive to collaborate with and be a resource to families and students alike.  Unfortunately, however, because of ever-accessible technology, the District frequently finds itself in a position where it is the subject of hurtful, slanderous or false social media posts.  Issues that are unresolved are suddenly before the court of public opinion, rather than being addressed together, with families, through collaboration. Also frequent, is the District hearing about issues or frustrations for the first time on social media, rather than directly.  Parents, eager to support one another or defend their students, sometimes share information that may be inaccurate or premature.

I am writing to ask for your help.  When you experience something negative relating to the Baldwinsville Central School District, please contact us directly.  Although our administration often finds itself busy and attending to pressing issues, we recognize we are in a position to serve.  Please give us the opportunity to do so before making judgments or posting information that may not yet be finalized.

Please also know there are certain times in which we cannot disclose all information to the broader community immediately, if at all.  For example, student and employee privacy are both strictly protected under the law, despite an often great desire by the community to be informed.  It is my pledge to you that the Baldwinsville Central School District will listen to your concerns and prioritize the health and well-being of our students.  I hope you will, in turn, provide us with the opportunity to respond to concerns before sharing information broadly.

Together, we can work to strengthen our already capable Baldwinsville school community and to continue to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, faculty, and staff.

Sincerely,

Matthew J. McDonald
Superintendent of Schools
