Go Bees! Baker technology students unveil new sign

C.W. Baker High School technology students Caley Gee and Stephen Cerquone assist in unveiling a new addition to the high school - a new sign. The project was a joint effort between students in both Mr. Hudson and Mr. Cuyler’s production systems technology classes. 

The project was an idea that building principal Mr. Denton and Mr. Cuyler have been discussing for over a year, and a few extra years in the making. Other than being designed and built by students the sign has two other interesting aspects. First; the wood used was acquired when the district was clearing the building lot for the construction of the new bus garage. Some of the cherry and pine logs from the site were saved then shipped to Logs to Lumber, a local saw mill where owner Mike Stock donated his time and services cutting and drying the lumber for later use. Waiting for a fitting project, the sign seemed like a good place to use some of it. Each student was responsible for creating one of the boards. They had to learn to use many woodworking tools in the Baker Technology shop to plane down the rough sawn wood. Overall the students got hands on with eight different tools making each piece of wood square and ready to be used.

Another interesting part of the sign comes from the letters themselves, they are cut from repurposed student desk surrounds that were used during the pandemic. After they were no longer needed, the students used a CNC router to cut the designs from the polycarbonate material, and added a little paint to finish them off. Each letter is set away from the wood to give it a 3-dimensional look.
