Dear Van Buren Families,
I hope that this letter finds you warm and well during this cold spell! While our holiday break became more of a hibernation period, I hope that you were able to spend quality time with loved ones.
The start of a new year is always an exciting time to reflect on our past and plan for what’s to come. This month, as part of our partnership with the Positivity Project, our students are learning about #perseverance and #hope/optimism. Learning about both of these strengths will help us set goals and work toward accomplishing them throughout the year ahead. You can read more about each strength on the attached character cards.
With the start of the new year, I would like to take the time to welcome a new teaching assistant to Van Buren, Miss Sarah Tryon. I would also like to welcome back Mrs. Chris Middlemore, a recently retired special education teacher, who will be a substitute for Mrs. Kristin Connell during her maternity leave. We congratulate Mrs. Connell on the birth of her daughter!
Next week, we are excited to kick-off one of our PTA’s favorite events: PARP (Pick a Reading Partner)! On January 12th we will be hosting author/illustrator Timothy Young and learning about his books and journey to becoming an author. You can learn more about his work at www.creaturesandcharacters.com . Following the kick-off assemblies, students’ PARP packets will be sent home to track students’ reading minutes through February 2nd. During PARP, our PTA has planned a variety of events including a new event called “Family Fun Reading Night” which will be featuring an “OK to Read Corrale” as part of this year’s “Saddle Up and
Read” theme. If your child is interested in featuring his or her favorite book, please remember to send in the form attached.
As the colder weather continues to approach, please ensure that your child has proper attire to wear outdoors for recess (coats, hats, etc.). While students are bringing more items to school with them, our lost and found continues to grow. If your child has lost a coat, hat, sweatshirt, etc. please check the lost and found located in the cafeteria.
Additional information and updates can be found below regarding various school and PTA events taking place the rest of the month. As always, thank you for your continued support!
Happy New Year!
Mrs. Danielle Nahorney
PARP (Pick a Reading Partner)
PARP (Pick A Reading Partner) is coming soon! This is one of the PTA's biggest programs, and one of the
students' favorites! During our kick-off assemblies on January 12, we will be hosting author Timothy Young. He will be reading his books, talking about writing, and doing drawing demonstrations for the students. Attached you will find a book order form if you would like to order any of his books. Order forms are due Thursday, January 4th . Mr. Young will be signing them as well. New to our PARP program this year, the PTA will be hosting a Family Fun Reading Night. As part of this event, there will be an "OK to Read Corral" reading fair where students can showcase a book that they love and recommend (think science fair, but with books). If your child plans to feature his or her favorite book, be sure to complete the flyer attached by Friday, January 5th .
Chorus Night at the Crunch
On January 27th, Van Buren’s Chorus will be performing. See the attached flyer for details on discounted tickets through our PTA!
