Mrs. Danielle Nahorney

  Dear Van Buren Families,

I hope that you found your Winter Break relaxing and rejuvenating. Whether you were able to get away or stayed
around town, chances are the weather was ideal to get outside for even a little bit of fresh air. They say that March "rolling like a lion and out like a lamb," so we'll see what the rest of the month brings!
Throughout the month of February, we continued to show our hope and optimism as we expand our partnership with the
Positivity Project by celebrating our character strengths of prudence, fairness, and love. The month began with ourPARP Wrap-Up Assembly, where we celebrated exceeding our reading goal by spending over 145,000 minutes reading! We had a blast watching Sheriff  Nahorney round up our wanted teacher volunteers, including our MOST WANTED Mrs. Battreall!
Our second grade families got to hear about some of our many February celebrations during our second grade concert held February 12th.
Thank you to everyone who attended to hear us sing about Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day, the 100th Day of School, and President’s Day! Our fifth graders were also hard at work with their annual Flower Sale, which donated over 700 carnations to the Syracuse Home Nursing Home.
Our fifth graders also hosted our Board of Education and District Cabinet members for their annual Spaghetti Dinner on February 26th. They had some great ideas to share over dinner with our District’s leaders!
The month of March will get off to a quick start, as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with Wacky Whatever Day on Friday, where things might just seem a little “off.” This month, our second grade team will lead our school community in collecting Pennies for Patients for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This will kick off during Friday’s March School-wide Meeting, where we’ll be learning about the character strength of social intelligence - an important strength when it comes to our ability to build relationships with others. Another program kicking off later this month is Girls on the Run, described by one of our 5th graders who participated while living in Kansas as "It's like Positivity Project meets Running Club and it's REALLY fun!" Girls on the Run is a 10-week curriculum that uses running to teach about setting personal goals, being a good friend, and helping others in the community. We’re excited for some of Van Buren’s own teachers to be our coaches! Information is attached regarding GOTR registration , which is open through March 5th for girls in grades 3-5.
This month, we’re also excited to welcome our next class of eager Van Buren learners (the class of 2031!) during Kindergarten Registration on Thursday, March 15th from 1:00-3:00 pm and 6:00-7:00 pm for families who have not yet pre-registered. As a reminder, March 15th is a half day of school for all elementary students, with dismissal at 11:30 am.
If you have questions about Kindergarten Registration, you can visit our District’s Kindergarten Registration website by clicking here , or you can contact Mrs. Smith in our Main Office at (315) 638-6121, or Kristin Weaver, District Registrar, at our District Office at (315) 638-6044.
Attached to this email, families of students in grades 3-5 will find additional information related to this year’s New York State English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science Computer Based Testing. Attached you will also find the Van Buren PTA's March Newsletter and flyers about upcoming Family Game Night on Friday, March 2nd, STEM Fair on Friday, March 23rd, and STEM + Family event on April 13th! Once you’ve had a chance to mark your calendars with the
following dates and review the attachments, please let your child’s teacher or our main office know if you have any questions!
