Pearl Harbor survivor talks to students at C.W. Baker High School

Radioman 1st Class Ed Stone, a Pearl Harbor survivor, visited C.W. Baker High School on Wednesday to talk to students.

Stone, 96, of Syracuse, is the last remaining WWII survivor in Onondaga County.

On Dec. 7, 1941, Stone was 18 years old and stationed with the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor. More than 2,400 Americans were killed when the Japanese launched a surprise assault on the Naval base.

Stone served on the USS Pyro, an ammunition ship. Stone told the high school students that a bomb missed the ship by a few feet.

“I was lucky, I guess,” Stone said. “I went all the way through WWII (and) didn’t even get a scratch, so I guess I was really lucky.”

Baker Principal Kris Denton gave Stone a Baldwinsville Bee pin and told Stone he was a Bee now.

“I’m a Bee now!” Stone said with a smile from ear to ear.
