The Baldwinsville Central School District Board of Education honored two teachers recently for their participation in the Leadership Fellows Program at Syracuse University.

Mindy Howard, a Palmer Elementary School teacher, and Joelle Fiorini, a Ray Middle School teacher, are the first two teachers in the district to participate in the leadership program.

The program, which is a partnership between the Baldwinsville Central School District and Syracuse University, offers tuition assistance to staff members who dream of being future school and district leaders. Those enrolled in the program take classes for four years to obtain New York State Dual Certification as a School Building Leader and a School District Leader.

The goal of the partnership, which was created last year and began in the fall, is to help provide opportunities for teachers in the district who are interested in leadership roles, according to Deputy Superintendent Joseph DeBarbieri.

On Jan. 13, Howard and Fiorini, were recognized at the Board of Education meeting for being part of the first cohort.

Dr. Leela George, Educational Leadership CAS Program Coordinator at Syracuse University's School of Education, said she was excited about the partnership with Baldwinsville.

“This, to me, demonstrates a firm commitment from the district to not only student learning, but adult learning,” George said at the board meeting. “That’s really impressive.”

An informational meeting will be held next month for teachers who are interested in learning about the leadership program. Cohort #2 will begin in the fall of 2022.

“Hopefully this is a great partnership that will continue for many years and grow future leaders,” DeBarbieri said.
